A Good Friday 2017 is celebrated among the Christian communities all around the Globe. But the proceedings of this religious ritual is somewhat diverse in certain countries like the Greece. The Greek observe the Easter as their primary carnival along with the Orthodox Church. The Good Friday is hence just a part of those celebrations.
The Proceedings of Good Friday 2017:
The opening ceremony for the ritual observance begins on the Friday immediately before the Easter Sunday when the local women prepare and decorate the “Epitafios”, a replica or the look alike of the Christ’s committal bier. Later on this “Epitafios” is marched as a procession throughout the avenues of the small towns or the suburbs of the metropolitans.
There are certain areas in Greece, like the Crete where the participants of the procession also set fire to the figurine of the Judas Iscariot.
Proceedings on the Following Saturday:
After the tiring processions the Christians celebrate the Victorious homecoming of the Jesus Christ on the Saturday. Just as the hands on the clock strike the midnight 12, the Churches and their courtyards all sink into darkness to commemorate the internal dark shadows our Christ was encompassed in as He continued his journey into and out of the underworld. Later a high priest comes out of the darkness, holding in to the air an illuminated taper and repeating “Avto to Fos…” meaning this is the Light. He then lights up the candles of the fellow altar boys using the Holy light. These fellows then light other’s candles by sharing their Light with everyone, till the whole church and its vicinity is enlightened by the light of the candles.
Right after the midnight ritual, the friends and families and loved ones get together to savour the “Mayeretsa”, a special soup prepared from tripe lamb combined with rice and seasoned with dill and a dash of lemon. The remaining lamb shall be prepared by roasting it on the Sunday for lunch amongst wine and cheerful celebration that happens to be the Easter.
